Ruidoso. The Year Round Playground of the Southwest
While many consider Santa Fe the cultural capital of New Mexico, Lincoln County is more than willing to rival this claim. Spectacular annual events showcase the cultural dynamics along the Billy the Kid Trail throughout the year. Travelers can always find something brewing. From chuck wagon cookouts to arts festivals, Blues festivals to community concerts, Lincoln County offers year round cultural enjoyment.
Some of the best art in New Mexico can be found right in Ruidoso, New Mexico. The Harris Poll has recognized the Ruidoso Art Festival as one of the most outstanding juried art shows in the Southwest. The cool pines create a beautiful mountain setting for spectacular art. Over 125 accomplished, professional artists display paintings, drawings, photography, glass, porcelain, woodwork, metalwork, jewelry, batik, pottery, weaving, fabric, leather and sculpture.
If you have a kick for western cooking and music then be sure to catch the Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium. Held at Ruidoso Downs every year, the Symposium gathers the world's finest cowboy poets, musicians, chuck wagon cooks, and artisans. For a better glimpse at the real west and American Indian cultures, be sure to see the Mescalero Apache Ceremonial Dances. Held during the first week of July, these ceremonial dances celebrate the Apache Spirit.
The cultural qualities of Lincoln County would be unfinished without mentioning the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts. Opened in October of 1997, the Spencer Theater creates a year-round venue for world-class performances in theater, music and dance. An aristocrat among theaters, the $22-million structure is splendid and elegant, yet intimate and welcoming.
